변영로
卞榮魯, Byeon Yeong-ro
born 1898 in Hansung (now Seoul), died 1961

A poet, essayist and scholar of English Literature, he translated the 1919 Korean Declaration of Independence into English, and acted as head editor for the magazines Sinmin Gongron 『신민공론』 and Singajeong 『신가정』in the 30s. He was also active as a writer for several other magazines during this time, including『신생활』, 『동명』, and『개벽』. Following Liberation, he worked as a professor of English Literature at Sungkyunkwan University and the Naval Academy, and later served as president of the newspaper company 대한공론사 which would later become The Korea Herald.
