신가정

新家庭, Singajeong; 1933/01 ~ 1936/09
accessible through Hyundam Mungo

A liberal arts education magazine established by the Dong-a Ilbo company for the education of women, with the motive of cultivating stronger family units during an era where cultural education was stymied under occupation. Publication largely included material concerning literary and social studies, as well as invites to more practical classes and in-person events concerning home economics. The main text of the publication is rendered largely in pure Korean with regards to making it more accessible to members of its demographic, who often lacked access to formal education. It is now considered one of the three major women’s magazines of the occupation period.

신가정 featured translated works from Claude McKay and Countee Cullen throughout its publication(a poem listed in 서양문학번역논저연표 under Langston Hughes (랭스톤 휴-스) titled 흑녀와 백녀 (“Black Woman and White Woman” was notated under vol. 3, issue 5, but it cannot be found in it or adjacent volumes nor can the original work be identified.) :

vol. 1, issue 8 (1933/07) featured:
